Review: A Question Of Boundaries by Sandy Bruney

Very Creative Alternative Timeline Historical Romance!

A Question Of Boundaries is #01 in the A Question of… Trilogy Series by Sandy Bruney.

This series is listed by Sandy Bruney on Audible but other sites have it listed under Sandra Bruney.

Ashley Holt narrates.

HFN with a continuing storyline.

This is a SMC Series: (Same Main Couple/Character Series) A trilogy to be exact. The first one can be listened to as a standalone, but if you intend to continue the series I would recommend reading these in order.

Length: 6 hrs and 36 mins

Content Advisory:
This is very PG with no sex.

At the time of this posting, this Audiobook is currently available as part of the Audible Romance Package.

And the E-Book is currently FREE with the Kindle Unlimited..

This is a Historical Romance with an Alternative Timeline. There are Steampunk elements as well as Paranormal. It’s definitely not like anything I’ve listened to before, in the best way.

Caroline ❤ Nathan

Caroline Featherstone is the heroine of this trilogy, and she is a stubborn little thing for sure. Although its an alternative world, its still not far from the history we know. Women are still without many of the rights we have today, but she is determined to be more than she is allowed to be. This leads her into to many shady situations, especially when jumping blindly in trying to find her dad. Her brilliant yet ignorant father, has gone missing and there are those that are not above kidnapping her to get to him. Lucky for her, there are those that would protect her with their lives. These friends have many special skills that give them an advantage above mere mortals. I don’t want to ruin any of the surprises, but just know that this is a paranormal and that wolf on the cover is not a pet!

Nathan Llewellen is our hero and he is more than meets the eye! He is a widower and a politician. Nate is heading the party to drop the border restrictions. He knows that if Caroline’s father truly did invent a way of communicating without wires, that it would upset the Status Quo of the last 80yrs. This should be a good thing, but there are those that greatly profit off the way things are now, that would kill to stay on top. There are paranormal secrets in Nathan’s closet, as well as those of his acquaintances.
Pay attention to the clues!

This title was published in late 2014, but is actually quite relevant to current political times. If you don’t follow politics, that’s OK too. This was a great ride, with lots of surprises! I was so much into the story that I missed one of the clues that should of been obvious to me. I still got it before it was revealed to me, but way after the point where I should of picked up on it. 😀 This is great for those that like paranormal romances, steampunk, historical romances, or clean romances. I personally like a little smutt in my reads/listens, but I still enjoyed this tale.

Audio Sample

Sandy/Sandra Bruney has created some great characters. The world building is very inventive. This is my first by her and I hope to listen to the rest of the series.

This was not my first or last listen by Ashley Holt. Her character voices are great even though at times it can get a bit muddy when the dialog goes on for length and numerous peeps are talking. Overall you don’t notice much though because you will be too rapped up in the story.

Normal speed was fine, however I listened at 0.90x. It is my personal preference.

Genre: Romantic Science Fiction

Taken captive, experimented on, and rescued by a mysterious bounty hunter…all things Zula, The Pittsburgh’s second-in command, didn’t have on her to-do list. She isn’t worried though. After all, as a Galvraron, she has her superior logic to rely on. At least she did….

Suddenly Zula finds her cognitive skills compromised by a device that puts her emotions in control, turning her entire world upside down. Add in the fact that she’s forced to spend time with a man from her past, and soon Zula finds herself wondering: How does one fight adversaries such as love and lust? And does she really want to?

Q&A with Narrator Ashley Holt
  • Do you read reviews for your audiobooks?
    • Yes, and my husband wishes I wouldn’t. 😉 People either love me or hate me. Years ago, an actor friend once told me that you shouldn’t read reviews, because you might start to change your style based on what you read. Wise words, I think.
  • If so, which ones stand out to you most, positive or negative?
    • When people get what I’m trying to do with the character. Someone said about Starblind that they “loved Jane’s sass and snark”. Made my day! Um, negative? Do we really have to go there? I’ve had someone say I never should have been chosen for that book. Another time I had someone get angry at me because the author anthropomorphized animals. That just killed me, because I LOVED voicing those kittens. They were all boy cats, and I could have done it all day!
  • What type of the review comments do you find most constructive?
    • Things like “she spoke too quickly”. That means the listener isn’t getting everything I say! Also I found out that a lot of people listen at 1.5x speed. Again thats the radio voice creeping in. Radio is fast, because you have to hit certain marks at exactly the right time.
  • Who is your “dream author” that you would like to record for?
    • Not dream author as much as dream GENRE. LitRPG is fantastic. It combines many of my favorite things. (I was an onlinegamer long before women were accepted in that world)
  • If you could narrate one book from your youth what would it be and why?
    • Dickens, Dickens, Dickens.
  • What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”?
    • Here have your dope slap.
  • What bits of advice would you give to aspiring audiobook narrators?
    • Be patient, don’t be afraid to ask for advice, be very careful about who you hire as a coach.
  • What’s next for you?
    • I am currently working on: Book 4 of the Starblind series!!!A revision of a BDSM Best Seller I did a year ago.A fictional history of Maria Luisa of Spain, wife to Leopold II, Holy Roman EmperorA university textbook about an American woman who settled in Palestine in the 19th centuryMain Street, by Sinclair Lewis (my first classic I am SO EXCITED)A firefighter romance. I jokingly call it book 3 of the triumvirate. Because I have already done the sports romance (my life was VERY meta during that book) and the cop romance.2 very dystopian novels, one by an Australian author that is BRILLIANT. The second one is by an Italian author, and I haven’t gotten too far into it, but the premise is great and the translation is excellent. An Encyclopedia of musical terms.
  • Bonus question: Any funny anecdotes from inside the recording studio?
    • Not so much from the studio, but its still funny. For a while, I kept getting sent auditions/books with lesbian lead characters. I was the go-to apparently. Coach says its the resonance in my voice. I did 19 short books about a lesbian dominiatrix, in addition to a couple of other full length books. After a while, my husband started to get shall we say, CONCERNED, which just cracked me up.
    • Mostly the in studio stuff are the “derps” we have. In the narrators group on Facebook, we have threads of the day where we post phrases that are tripping us up. Those can get pretty funny.

Review: Flux (Starblind, #3) by D.T. Dyllin

My ReviewsThe Best So Far! Love Zula And Cade!

Flux is #03 of 04 in Starblind Series by D.T. Dyllin. All 4 are currently published with 3 of them being on Audio. The author has confirmed that #4 is the final book in the series and is in audio production to be on Audible soon.

Ashley Holt narrates the series.

HEA with no cliffhanger!

This series is only 4 books long and is heavily connected by characters and overall story arc so I recommend reading the books in order. It is not only more enjoyable that way, but you will miss out on a lot of details if you read them out of order.

Length: 6 hrs and 58 mins

Content Warning:
Sex both in thoughts and actions, so if you do not like sex, then you should avoid.

♥ Story ♥

Zula ❤ Kade

Flux picks up with Zula’s captivity. You find out what the kidnappers did to her, how she got away, and what happened in the interim.

This was a fun listen! A nice turn of story after the intensity and feels of book #2. I think it’s the best so far!

Zula

Zula is a Galvraron. A humanoid species with blue skin and blonde hair. This appearance is what spawns the human culture obsessed Jane to nickname her Smurfette! As you could guess, she hates it! She is second in command on The Pittsburgh and usually the levelheaded one, however, her encounter with a new piece of tech sends that to hell in a hand-basket!

Letting her emotions loose, turns Zula into Jane, and it is a fun ride. We get to learn more about her life, why she left on The Pittsburgh, and who she is actually related to. Kade is a good counter balance to Zula’s overly logical mind.

Kade

Kade is a mercenary, sent by Zula’s parents to bring her home. He has his own secrets and ties to her family. They are good too! To say any more would be spoilers, so if you want to get details, please see my Read Along for it.

The Starblind series just keeps getting better! The plot thickens as we head into the final book! Nina is the heroine of that story and it is set into motion toward the end of Flux by Jane. I’m excited to listen to it when it hits audio soon, but sad that this series will be over. I don’t know how its all going to go down, but I just know it is going to be epic!

Q&A with Narrator Ashley Holt
  • What about this title compelled you to audition as narrator?
    • The lead character. I geeked out bigtime over this title. I went online and downloaded art to represent the main characters, and printed them out and put them up on the walls. I really got into it!
  • How closely do you prefer to work with authors?
    • That is a difficult question to answer. Every author is different, and each experience is different. Having said that, DT stands out as being VERY different from most authors, to the point where we chat in email and talk about hockey more than books!
  • Who are your “accent inspirations”?
    • Another difficult question. I don’t know if I have any. Coming from the opera world makes this a very different experience than a traditional American actor, because we are steeped in the language immediately. When opera singers have to sing in English, its often a very difficult transition! Did I answer the question???
  • How did you decide how each character should sound in this title?
    • Practice, a TON of practice and sounding them out in dialogue scenes. Although I now wish I hadn’t chosen such a gruff voice for Dar, because he figures prominently in Book 4, and damn, that gets painful after a while, even with a ton of vocal warmup. I work with my coach on this a LOT, and she encourages me to put more variety in. It is a learned skill, so with every book I do, I hopefully get better!
  • What types of things are harmful to your voice?
    • 4 hours of continually voicing a gruff character! Ha, no not really. The big no no? Alcohol the night before. Again, back to the opera training. Over 30 years of training (I started when I was 14) and I can feel changes in my vocal cords like THAT. My voice is my instrument, and even one drink the night before changes the COLOR and TIMBRE. Have 2 or 3, and I might not be able to record the next day at all, depending on what book I’m doing or what character.
  • Has anyone ever recognized you from your voice?
    • HA, yes! I mentioned I travel for the day job, and sometimes we drive. So one day we were gassing up at a station somewhere, and the clerk recognized my voice. It was great.
  • Have there been any characters that you really connected with?
    • I now tend to pick titles that have the bit of snark that I resonate with. Having said that, I did a time-travel alt history with a very saccharine sweet heroine that garned some very good reviews, so what do I know?
  • If you had the power to time travel, would you use it? If yes, when and where would you go?
    • SIGN ME UP. I would go to the year 1800, and become a student of Beethoven. I am obsessed with learning the piano – I always wanted to, and never studied. I can plunk out a few things, but I mean really immerse myself the way I did in voice lessons. Also, I am a dork for 19th century literature, especially Russian and Dickens, my favorite author.
  • How does audiobook narration differ from other types of voiceover work you’ve done?
      • I did classical music radio for afew years, and even there, where the style is not as much “in your face” as it would be for a rock station or talk radio, the radio style is still very INTENSE. When I work with my coaches, it is to get the “radio sound” out of my voice.

Q&A with Narrator Ashley Holt
  • How did you wind up narrating audiobooks? Was it always your goal or was it something you stumbled into by chance?
    • HA< totally by chance. A friend of mine asked me for help building her recording studio. (My day job is in TV/internet broadcast, so that is why she asked me) I asked her what it was for, and she said “I’m going to narrate for Audible. YOU should do it” So I auditioned for 3 books and got all 3 of them right out of the gate. One of those books is still one of my best sellers. It is a non-fiction book about the Meyers-Broggs MBTI personality profiles and how yo use them to analyze people. My friend? Narrated one book and quit after finding out how hard it is.
  • Did you find it difficult to “break into” audiobook narration? What skill/tool helped you the most when getting started?
    • No, but I really have an edge many folks don’t: a combo platter of: a background in radio, acting and opera (yes, singing) and a very strong tech background in audio/video production and website development. (my dad always insisted I have a backup plan for that artsy career I wanted. So its easy for me to narrate, produce and deal with the website interface of ACX. My Achilles heel? MARKETING. 😉 Might be why I am here.
  • A lot of narrators seem to have a background in theatre. Is that something you think is essential to a successful narration career?
    • A THOUSAND TIMES YES. There are authors that think they can narrate their own book because they have done book readings. Audiobooks are an entirely different animal. The listener wants an IMMERSIVE experience, with full-blown characterizations and world-building.
  • What type of training have you undergone?
    • I have an MFA in opera, and over 20 years of experience preparing and singing opera roles. I have audiobook coaches. (an absolute MUST) One for non-fiction, one for fiction, and one for dialects/accents.
  • How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for narrating?
    • The big lesson I learned is to not take too many books in the same genre. There are only so many ways you can voice certain romance scenes, so I need a non-fiction or a sci-fi or my new favorite genre, LitRPG to mix things up.
  • Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
    • This is a holdover from my opera days. YOu always listen to the greats. Listening to them is also a form of coaching. Kate Reading and Xe Sands are 2 I like a lot, I also listen to my coaches, Sean Pratt (who is currently working on his 950th book) and Carol Monda. I mentioned before, I do this part time. My day job involves a LOT of traveling, both local and cross-country. When I’m stuck in a 6 hour layover in Houston, or have to drive cross-country audiobooks are a godsend!!!
  • What are your favorite and least favorite parts of narrating an audiobook?
    • Favorite? When I feel that phrase hit just right for the moment and the mood. Starblind was a TON of fun in that regard, because I am snarky/sarcastic by nature, so her character fit like a glove…Least favorite is marking during prep. My prep involves reading the book multiple times, (which I love) and then I have to mark pronuncistions, breathing, pauses, emotions, accents…when I wa still using an Android tablet, it was horrendous. I love Android, but switching to an iPad was a game-changer in that respect.
  • What would you say are your strongest narration abilities?
    • Right now, dialogue, especially if its snappy patter. I think I channel Rosalind Russell in “His Girl Friday” or Rene Russo in “The Thomas Crown Affair” remake a LOT.
  • Is there a particular genre you feel unsuited for? Have you ever declined a project because you didn’t think you were right for it?
    • OMG yes, and I learned this one the hard way. Regency Romance. The only one I did, I did not use an accent. (Granted, the author did not request it, but STILL) Then after I was done, I found out that an RP British accent is de rigeur, and I took a BEATING in reviews over it. Dialect coach says its one of the hardest to learn, so I won’t be doing any of those titles anytime soon.

Review: Parallax (Starblind, #2) by D.T. Dyllin

My ReviewsI got the feels, but I still want more!

Parallax is #02 of 04 in Starblind Series by D.T. Dyllin. All 4 are currently published with 2 of them being on Audible. #3 is in audio production now, with #4 to soon follow. The author has confirmed that #4 is the final book in the series.

Ashley Holt narrates the series thus far.

♥ Story ♥

Tamzea ❤ Eron

Parallax picks up not long after the end of Starblind. The Pittsburgh is now up 3 passengers. We get a bigger glimpse of the classification system. There are also some new species introduced along the way.

This is Tamzea’s story, and it gave me some deep feels! The story flashes back and forth in time as memories are relived. I will warn you now, they aren’t happy or pretty!

Tamzea

Tamzea is a Mazatimz. A species human in appearance, except for their lavender eyes and hair. Most of them end up as some kind of doctor due to their healing abilities. Mazatimz children are often locked away and sheltered to protect them from the dangers of the world. This turns out to be their downfall.

The back story to Tamzea’s life comes flooding back with a vengeance after a chance encounter with an out of control space pod. We find out about her escape and guilt over the loved one she thought dead, that she left behind.

Eron is the other half of Tamzy’s pair-bond. He lied and sacrificed to protect another. Life, however, is never that black and white. Just as shady deals are rarely honored. His strife really pulls the heart strings, so try to cut the guy some slack. There is always more to the story, because the things you see and the thoughts you have, may not be your own. (that is supposed to be cryptic)

The Starblind series is still a page turner and I’m sad that I will have to wait to listen to the next in the series, #3 and #4. My heart needs time to recover, but I will have much to say in the Read Along With Me for it. (to be posted soon)

….They were wrong about that, too.”

♥ Author ♥

This is my 2nd read/listen by D.T. Dyllin, and I can’t wait to listen to more, but I’m going to have to do it! 🙁 The world building just gets better and the characters pull tears from my heart.

♥ Narrator(s) ♥

This is my 2nd listen by Ashley Holt and she did a good job with story. Voice separation when there are too many characters in the same scene could use some polish to insure you can tell them apart.

Review: Starblind (Starblind #1) by D.T. Dyllin

My ReviewsA page turner, I can’t wait to listen to more!

Starblind is #01 of 04 in Starblind Series by D.T. Dyllin. All 4 are currently published with 2 of them being on Audible. #3 is in audio production now, with #4 to soon follow. The author has confirmed that #4 is the final book in the series.

Ashley Holt narrates the series thus far.

HEA with no cliffhanger!

This series is only 4 books long and is heavily connected by characters and overall story arc so I recommend reading the books in order. It is not only more enjoyable that way, but you will miss out on a lot of details if you read them out of order.

Length: 6 hrs and 59 mins

Warning: SEX!
Yes, both in thoughts and actions, so if you do not like sex, then you should avoid.

Trigger Warnings
None that I see.
Please let me know if you think there should be.

♥ Story ♥

Jane ❤ Ash

Starblind takes place in the future many years after the original earth was destroyed. On New Earth, being “just human” is no longer good enough! Genetic DNA splicing is how babies are made in this new world. When children are old enough, they are tested, rated, and classified by ability.

Each book has a different couple as a main focus, but there is so much more to these tales! The characters at the center of the Starblind Series are rebels and dreamers, determined to buck the system of what is expected for what is adventurous.

Jane Sevis

Jane is a Hybrid Human and the owner and captain of The Pittsburgh. Her personality is snarky, rude, impulsive, and totally works for her chosen profession as a bounty hunter. The story starts with Jane in pursuit of one of those bounties, which goes wrong quickly.

Jane wants a fresh start and to be something more than what the tests say she can be. She tested out as a normal human, Species Class 1 out of 4. Most are expected to be Class 2 or 3, so this didn’t leave her many options, friends, or family on New Earth. That’s Harsh! So much for unconditional love in the future!

“I wasn’t a cat and I only had one life, so if curiosity killed me … I was screwed.”

Ash

Ash is Species Class 4, and you will have to listen for yourself to find out what makes him so special! He is the fly in Jane’s ointment when it comes to her bounties. His level of snark and mischief give Jane’s a run for their money! Ash knows there are secrets to be had when it comes to Jane, even if she doesn’t know them herself. The interactions between these 2 are hot and angsty.

The Pittsburgh is basically the headquarters of the story. It has become home for Jane and her 3 crew members. Zula, Jane’s #2, is a Galvraron which are known for their high IQs. Tamzea, ship medic, is a Mazatimz which are known for their empathic and healing abilities. Masha, ship engineer, is a Guaviva which are known for their ability to ‘speak’ to anything electronic.

Each of these females are also looking for a do-over and have sorted histories of their own. All of which I look forward to learning as the series continues.

“Well, I might as well tell everyone since I apparently can’t have any secrets around here.”

The Starblind series is a page turner and I can’t wait to listen to the next in the series, Parallax (Tamzea’s story). I can’t really comment more without spoiling something. And trust me, I have a bunch of comments to make, but you will have to go over to the Read Along With Me for it, to be posted soon.
