Audiobookworm Blog Tour: Fury’s Kiss

Author: Nicola R. White

Narrator: Elizabeth Tebb

Length: 9 hours 2 minutes

Series: New England Furies, Book 1

Publisher: Strange Roads Press

Released: Sep. 18, 2017

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Tara Walker dreams of more excitement than slinging plates of seafood for Cape Cod tourists, but as she learns when she is attacked and forced to fight for her life, fate sometimes has a funny way of giving you exactly what you wish for. Faced with strange new powers and embroiled in a murder investigation, Tara must now race to uncover the secrets of the ancient Fury that has woken inside of her – and of the evil that stalks her.

As if Tara’s life hasn’t gotten complicated enough, she is forced to ally herself with Jackson Byrne, witness to her assault and uncle to a pint-sized oracle whose fate is intertwined with hers. Skeptical, stubborn, and oh-so-sexy, Jackson wrestles with demons of his own. He is determined to ignore the attraction rising between them even faster than the body count, but like it or not, he and Tara need each other if they are to unravel the mysteries that surround them.

Nicola R. White comes from a small city on the east coast of Canada where ghost stories and superstitions abound. Although she is a lawyer by profession, her passion is reading and writing fiction. In 2016, Nicola’s debut novel, Fury’s Kiss, won the $10,000 Kobo Emerging Writer Prize in Romance. She is currently producing her first graphic novel.

Nicola is a member of Romance Writers of America and Romance Writers of Atlantic Canada. She is a frequent guest and speaker at literary events such as Word on the Street and Hal-Con, the largest sci fi/fantasy convention east of Montreal.

Narrator Bio

I am a literacy specialist with experience performing in a number of roles. Having spent a great deal of time speaking publicly as both an educator and an administrator, I have accrued a varied skill set that I feel confident I can use to advance and advertise bodies of work. My passion for literature drives me to bring the voices within it to life.

  • Q: Have you always been a fan of Greek Mythology, or was it something new to you?
    • I have always loved mythology of all types and wanted to be an archaeologist when I was a kid. I knew the basics of Greek mythology when the idea for Fury’s Kiss came to me, but I had to do much more detailed research for the book. As the series has grown, the world building has gotten very complex and I’ve learned a ton of interesting history and mythology.
  • Q: Are there plans to bring the rest of the series to Audio?
    • Yes! I hope to release the second book in audio by the end of this year, and then pick up the pace of production after that to get books three and four in listeners’ hands as well.
    • I am SO excited!
  • Q: Are there any more titles planned in this series or a potential spin-off in this world?
    • Right now there are four books in my New England Furies series, with three more planned.
    • I wonder who those are going to be about?!
  • Q: I loved the character of Mrs. Hadley. Was she based on or inspired by anyone you know?
    • Mrs. Hadley is based on my grandmother. She is not quite as eccentric as Mrs. Hadley is, but she’s a close second. She always has great stories to tell and knows the latest neighborhood gossip. She loves to try new things, even in her mid-80s, and you can count her to say something inappropriate and hilarious.
    • Those are always the best!
  • Q: Is there a hidden joke written into the bar? Especially with one of the men at the bar having the last name of Priest. One of those jokes that involves women of a certain hair color and a priest walk into a bar.
    • The bar is actually modelled after a bar where I worked as a bartender while I was in university. The description of the interior is very similar to the real thing and some of the characters that come into the bar are based on real people I met while working there. There was no particular meaning behind the last name of Priest, although I liked the irony of the name being attached to a “bad guy”. However, there is someone who gets killed off in this book who shares a name with an old ex!
  • Q: As readers and listeners we all have our favorite lines, but what were some of yours. It may be the equivalent of asking a parent to pick their favorite child, but they know.
    • This is a tough one! I had a lot of fun writing Mrs. Hadley and she is a fan favorite, so pretty much any of her lines could qualify. I also had fun imagining the unintentionally funny things Ruby might say, like confusing her Navy SEAL uncle with an actual seal (the animal). Finally, I really like the last lines of the book, although I won’t quote them here and spoil it for readers/listeners.

Custom Q&A with Author Lisa Becker by Audiobook Romance on July 2nd

  • Where did the inspiration for Clutch come from? Secret bag obsession come to life or personal philosophy?
    • When I was writing the Click trilogy, (Click: An Online Love Story, Double Click, and Right Click), I was obsessed with NCIS re-runs and would have the show on in the background as I wrote. There was an episode where a character refers to a man as a “handbag husband,” or something useless you carry on your arm. I started thinking about that, and the idea for Clutch grew from there. I believe that everyone deserves a happily ever after and would like to think there’s a “clutch,” or someone worth holding onto, out there for everyone.
  • Some of the dating scenarios seem very specific. Were
any of the potential beaus or their dates based on real life experience?

    • The dating scenarios in Clutch are pure fiction – a product of my overactive imagination, but I’m flattered you think they are realistic enough to be drawn from real life experiences. But my first novel, Click, is loosely based on my real-life dating experiences, as well as stories friends have shared with me. In some cases, things are written as they actually occurred. Other scenarios are exaggerated for entertainment value or comedic affect. And some scenarios are completely fictionalized, though I really did go out on a date with someone I met online who started every story (no joke!) with “My buddies and I were out drinking last night.”
  • What is your favorite or go to bag you can’t live without?
    • I have a black, Michael Kors hobo-style bag that is like an extension of my body. It houses all my essentials. Where I go, the bag goes.
  • Have you found the perfect clutch (partner) in real life?
    • I do! 18 years ago, I met my clutch on an dating website, when online dating was in its infancy. We celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary this summer and have two beautiful girls. My grandmother used to say, “For every chair, there’s a tush.” So, if it happened for me, there’s hope for anyone!
  • What are your feelings on the man bag? We have our own little micro storage where they are left to only pockets. Gender inequality, or only fair since men’s clothing is designed with pocket storage in mind?
    • Yes! A controversy for the ages. If my husband had a man bag, I fear he would leave home without me, as he wouldn’t need me to hold his keys, wallet, breath mints and other assorted sundries. LOL!
  • Finally, how do you weigh in on the debate heard round the world. Can one have too many bags?
    • Never!

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Amy Deuchler. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

  1. How did you select your narrator? I compare the search to looking through a ton of oysters to find a pearl. I’m super picky about narrators. I want them to feel the passion and pain in my story and put emphisis where I have it in my mind. The narrator has to fit the tone of the book and know what makes the characters react the way they do. Not an easy task, but I know when I hear the clips.
  2. Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing? All of my writing has a piece of me written between the lines, especially my Lake Lanier Mysteries Series. The first time I heard the eerie lore, strange occurances and supernatural sitings, my muse danced. The tales told me what to write, and the pages flowed like water. Now that I live on the lake, I’m inspired every day.
  3. Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you? I don’t know what I’d do without audiiobooks. After a long day of sitting at my computer, reading, writing, research, promo, and marketing, my eyes blur. I love to read, but my eyes just say enough is enough. Audiobooks take me into the stories I love, while my eyes rest. I listen in my car, shopping, walking, or sitting on my porch. Anytime I need a break I have my stories. I love audiobooks!
  4. Is there a particular part of this story that you feel is more resonating in the audiobook performance than in the book format? Amy nails the tense moments. She reads with the passion and intensity that those scenes need and makes the words jump off the pages with emotion. People can’t always read what the author feels but a good narrator helps translate those feelings.
  5. If you had the power to time travel, would you use it? If yes, when and where would you go? Obviously, as a romantic suspense time travel author, I love the concept! I would use the power in a heartbeat. I’m not sure what I’d choose as my first destination…and yet, in a sense, I’ve already experienced a time slip with each of my novels. I hope everyone feels that way when they listen to or read my books…after all, that’s the point.
  6. In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of writing a stand-alone novel vs. writing a series? I love a series. They give me a chance to revisit characters and places I already love and, as an author, a series reconnects me to readers who loved my stories. A stand-alone is easier. One and done. In a series, you have to find a way to bring your readers up to speed without dumping too much backstory on them. But a series, to me, is more rewarding. I try to make all of my series stories stand-alone, but I make sure some of the previous characters visit in smaller roles.
  7. What’s your favorite:
    1. Food: Lobster
    2. Song: Everlasting Love
    3. Book: Knight In Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux
    4. Television: show Outlander
    5. Movie: Déjà Vu
    6. Band: Anything Motown
    7. Sports: team Atlanta Braves [pro] Georgia Bulldogs [college]
    8. City: Ashville N.C. or Charleston S.C.
  8. Are any of those things referenced in appearance in your work? I was inspired by Outlander and Déjà Vu but they aren’t refrenced in my writing.
  9. What bits of advice would you give to aspiring authors? Learn from those who have walked the path before you, and never give up on your dreams.
  10. What’s next for you? My current WIP is a romantic political thriller, Reign Of Fire, which is the first in my Deep State Mysteries series, and I’m also working on a new supernatural romance series, Ghosts Of Lake Lanier.

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Series: Take A Chance, Book 3

Release date: Apr. 30, 2015

You can design a perfect life, then a woman comes along and messes it all up!

Prescott Chance is the go-to architect for the wealthy and famous, which has made him more wealthy and famous than he’s ever wanted to be. He turns down more commissions than he accepts and is extremely private.

Holly Legere is barely making ends meet between rent and student loans. As an assistant to Alistair Rupert, the notoriously difficult industrialist, she works night and day for slave wages, hanging on in hopes of a promised promotion in his huge organization. When Alistair Rupert’s wife decides she wants a Prescott Chance-designed house, and Prescott turns her down, it’s Holly’s job to make the choosy architect change his mind. And Holly is a very determined woman. In this modern romantic comedy, she’ll go to any lengths to get him to design her boss a house, including pulling in his huge family for support.

Publisher: Ambleside Publishing⎮2015

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Series: Take A Chance, Book 2

Release date: Mar. 26, 2015

Iris Chance is turning 33. She’s an independent woman, the owner of the Sunflower Coffee and Tea Company in Hidden Falls, Oregon. Hidden Falls boasts clean air, natural beauty, good neighbors. The only problem is that there are zero interesting single men and Iris wants a baby. She’d love the whole package – the love story, the sexy romance with a hero who will sweep her off her feet – but she doesn’t have time to wait for Mr. Right. He may lose his way and never show up. She decides to start a family with the help of a sperm bank, knowing she’ll have her large family to support and encourage her as a single mom. When the new High School English teacher, Geoff McLeod, walks into her cafe and into her life he seems perfect. There’s only one problem.

Geoff McLeod never imagined his wife would end their six-year marriage with a text message. Reeling from her betrayal, he moves to Hidden Falls to teach English and Creative Writing. He’s got zero interest in women or dating until he meets Iris Chance, the intriguing woman who bakes the best Morning Glory muffins he’s ever tasted. He can’t imagine starting his day without stopping in on his way to work for coffee and a muffin and to see the sexiest woman who ever donned an apron.

Iris is the oldest girl in a family of 11 kids. She’s always been the stand-in mother to her younger siblings. She’s got so used to looking out for other people and listening to their problems that she’s become the confidante and unofficial therapist of half the town. She can see that the new English teacher has some emotional baggage dragging along behind him. He looks like he can use a friend and Iris has never been able to turn away from someone in pain. She’s prepared to be his friend, but she would never get involved with someone who is still officially married.

But love has a funny way of messing up the best-laid plans.

My Review Here

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Nancy Warren. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

  • Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook.
    • Turning Kiss a Girl in the Rain and then the next four books in my Take a Chance series of small town romances was a blast. I plan to make an audiobook of every book in the series (it’s going to be 12).I think the only difficult part of the process was finding a narrator. I had so many auditions to listen to! I was a bit stressed as I wanted the same narrator for all the books, but when I heard Teri’s voice, I knew we were onto something. After that, it was a simple matter of sending Teri my book and leaving all the rest to her.
  • How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters?
    • Teri’s a pro, so there’s not much work to do where she’s concerned. I still remember the time she emailed me though and told me how difficult one of my sentences was. It was something like, “He hacked off a hunk of ham and put it on the plate.” I still laugh when I think about accidentally giving Teri a tongue twister and now, when I write, I do try to avoid anything that would be too clunky to say. Teri and I go back and forth a few times, of course. There’s an editing process, but after five books together it’s pretty seamless.
  • Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing?
    • Well, primarily, we writers do make things up. Otherwise we’d all be journalists. But of course real life offers experiences that are too good not to use, or to twist and shape into something that works in a novel. Believe it or not, some of the funniest or strangest things that happen to me in real life, I can’t use in a book because no one would believe it. Truth really is stranger than fiction sometimes. However, I use bits and pieces of people and experiences and turn them into fiction. For instance, in Kiss a Girl in the Rain, the hero, Evan, is based on a young man I know. He’d recently taken up motorcycle riding and planned a cross-country trip, and I created a stressed out, overworked lawyer who suddenly decides to take off on a cross country motorcycle trip. The heroine in Blueprint for a Kiss is a lot like me. No matter how hard she tries, there’s always a button missing or a thread hanging or her top’s come untucked from her jeans. My hair, like hers, is curly and has a life of its own. It’s a bit like Mr Potato Head sometimes, putting a bit of this person’s personality, with the looks of the celebrity and maybe a quirky mannerism or dress style of a third. But somewhere along the way, these characters become their own people. It’s magic.
  • How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing?
    • Burn-out is a real problem, especially these days when writers are always pressured to write more books faster. I was reaching that point myself and last year I gave myself a gift. I took a year off and took a Master’s degree in Creative Writing. I wrote in a completely new genre, studied my craft and lived in a different country. Now that I’m back I’ve rediscovered the joy in writing. However, you don’t have to be that extreme! I find walking my dog, or reading a good book (that’s how writers start, after all) or seeing a good movie or play all maintain my love of story. Playing with words is just fun for me and I hope that never changes.
  • Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
    • I do listen to audiobooks. I will listen to them when I’m commuting, or sometimes if I’ve been on the computer too long and my eyes are too tired to read, it’s lovely to listen to a professional narrator telling me a story. I’ve got books loaded in my phone so they’re always with me. Then those annoying snags in life, like my car isn’t ready when the mechanic said it would be, or I’m stuck in a line up or waiting room, become pleasurable times as I get lost in a story.
  • If you had the power to time travel, would you use it? If yes, when and where would you go?
    • Could I come back?? I love the notion of time travel. I was living in Bath in the UK last year and I felt as though, if I could go back in time, I could meet Jane Austen and invite her to tea. If I had to pick an era, Georgian England would be my choice, but I’d want to be able to travel back to modern plumbing, medicine and airplane travel.
  • How did you celebrate after finishing this novel?
    • The same way I celebrate after every novel. Chocolate, wine and a hot bath. I usually buy myself a small gift, too. It’s so important to celebrate, isn’t it? When we write a book we’re all alone, struggling with plot, characters, editing, and all the business aspects of writing that it’s easy to forget what an accomplishment it is to finish a book. I think celebrating each success is a great way to reward that hard working muse and make sure she doesn’t leave for greener pastures!
  • Have any of your characters ever appeared in your dreams?
    • Well, this is a little personal but the truth is I always fall in love with my heroes. Every. Single. One. And when I’m mid book, I dream about them. It’s a bit sad, but true. I also sometimes very deliberately think about a plot problem as I’m drifting off to sleep and I’ll sometimes dream the answer, or I’ll wake up with it. That’s so cool when it happens. Of course, sometimes I just end up unable to sleep, so it’s a risk.
  • What bits of advice would you give to aspiring authors?
    • This is such a great time to be a writer because our industry is going through massive changes. If you prefer to go with an agent and a traditional publisher, that option is there, and with the advent of indie publishing, writers can take control of their books and careers, and that’s exciting too. Being able to write something, publish it with an online retailer and go straight to readers with our stories is revolutionary and many authors are finding huge success. However, my advice would be to take your time. Read how-to books, learn your craft, and make sure to hire a good editor. Make sure your book is the best it can be before sending it to agents or uploading to an online retailer. Then get busy on the next book. A lot of things in our industry have changed, but writing a good book hasn’t.
  • What’s next for you?
    • I am currently writing book seven in the Take a Chance series. I am so happy in the world of Hidden Falls, Oregon where this quirky Chance family lives. I’m going to keep writing until every one of the kids gets their story. I also have a secret project on the go, a new series that I’m super excited about. I’ll post more information as I have it. The best way to keep up with all of my projects is by joining my newsletter at www.nancywarren.net
