Review: Vaulcron (Enigma #3) by Ditter Kellen

My ReviewsA love story between a Bracadyte Prince and a Great White Shark!

Vaulcron is #03 of 09 in the Enigma Series by Ditter Kellen. All 9 are currently published with 05 of them being in audio. The author plans for the other 4 to be in audio by the end of the year. She also plans many more after #09 at this time. Which excites me to no end!
Happy dance

Johnny Mack narrates the series, to include all future editions.

HEA with no cliffhanger!

These are connected by characters so I recommend reading the books in order. It is more enjoyable that way, but could be taken as standalones if you absolutely insist. There would be spoilers for the earlier ones if you start in the middle.

Length: 4 hrs and 39 mins

Bracadyte Prince, Vaulcron ❤ Mallory “Great White Shark” Cahill

“I’m the Great White Shark. Remember?”

Mallory

Mallory Cahill is a second generation reporter who knows the truth about the virus, but doesn’t have the proof needed to bring down those responsible. She just had the story of a lifetime and her proof dropped into her lap. Vaulcron, a Bracadyte, wants to meet and set the story straight about his people. Mallory can’t believe her luck or the immense attraction she feels for him. She quickly realizes how false all the reports are about the Bracadytes and vows not to give away their location.

“Please, call me Mallory.”

Vaulcron

Vaulcron is older brother to Hauke and Naura from books #01 & #02. He has felt the pull to the one they call a shark since he first saw her on the news in the last book. He wants to make peace with humans and keep his people safe, and so reaches out to the human reporter for help. After they are abducted by the military, he vows to keep Mallory safe as well as make her his!

“You are aware that I am to be king of Aukrabah once my father steps down.”
— Vaulcron

Time, location, and family are not all on their side. Mallory needs to protect her sister, who has her senses set on a Bracadyte of her own. (I say senses because Amy is blind) Vaulcron wants to protect Mallory from those that seek to harm her just to get to him. The Vice President wants to protect the American population from the insanity that is the President. The human citizens as a whole just don’t want to die from the virus that is at large regardless of where it came from. So as you can see, there is more excitement to be had in Book #03!

“It is the only way,” Vaulcron sent back. “If I do not go, Aukrabah will be lost forever. I refuse to run for the rest of my life.”
— Vaulcron

There is so much more I want to say, but can’t without spoiling something. The list of people I want to stab in the face has gotten longer! I will defiantly have some rants for the Read Along With Me, so look for it over there hopefully soon.

“To bond with a Bracadyte is to share one’s soul, one’s life force. You would forever be a part of me, to know my thoughts, my feelings, my heart.”
— Vaulcron

♥ Story ♥

Bracadyte Princess, Naura ❤ Anthony “Tony” Vaughn

“Every day until I draw my last breath”.

Naura

Naura is sister to Hauke from Book #01 which makes her a princess of the Bracadytes. She took blood from Tony in that first book, therefore linking her to him forever. During this exchange, she bared witness to his memories of the horrible way his wife and son were taken from him. It is against the Bracadyte law to take blood from humans as it is also a no-no to mate with one. Hauke and Abbie barely got around this, but Abbie has to forever stay in Aukrabah. Naura knows Tony will never agree to this, but wants Tony anyway!

“Naura differs from the rest of us. The gift she carries inside her is cemented in love and light. It cannot dwell in darkness.”

Tony

Anthony “Tony” Vaughn is Abbie’s Uncle and an ex-CIA operative. His former employment is what has led to the demise of his family, his near non-existence in the human world, and some “connections” that always seem to know what is going on behind the scenes. Tony wants Naura but fights it at every turn because he feels broken beyond repair. He worries that karma is determined to make him pay for the deeds of his past.

“You’re not like me, Naura. You’re good and pure, and I’m all that is opposite of that. If I had met you before…before I became a monster, I would have given you everything that you deserve and more.”
— Tony

Naura and Tony are joined by all the characters from Book #01 that, if you have been listening in order, should of grown to love. Braum’s clever deceptions are to be commended. Gryke’s bumbling of common human phrases are hysterical. Vaulcron’s obsession with the “Great White Shark” reporter leaves much to look forward to. I can’t wait until I can get to listen to their HEA stories!

“Chicken,” Naura taunted with a grin.
Gryke tilted his head to the side. “What is a chicken?”
A chuckle bubbled up inside her. “It is human slang for one who is afraid.”

The couple this time around face challenges on the personal level as well as the outside world that all seem to be stacked against them. There is more to be learned about the virus, as well as some secrets being kept by those that are trusted. Book #02 matches Book #01 in the action department and will not let you down.

He suddenly gripped her upper arms and gave her a slight shake. “Don’t you say that.” He shook her once more. “Ever. Do you hear me? You survive. No matter what, you have to survive.”
— Tony

I am glad this series is going on my Read Along With Me list because I really want to comment without spoiling something. I got a lot to vent about Henry! I really don’t like him! Look for it over there hopefully soon.

Breaking off the kiss, he stared into her amazing eyes. “I’ve never known love on this level before. It excites me and scares the hell out of me at the same time. I’m going to be overprotective, unbearable, and a royal pain in the ass. A lot. But I’ll cherish you until I draw my last breath.”
— Tony

Bracadyte Prince, Hauke ❤ Doctor Abbigail Sutherland

“Enigma,” he finished for her.

Abbie

Doctor Abbigail Sutherland knows her dad is up to something and follows him to work to find that the answer is more than she could of imaged. A human-like specimen is in the lab, waiting to be retrieved by the military. Abbie feels drawn to this creature but cannot fathom why. He seems familiar for some reason.

Enigma

Hauke

Hauke is a type of alien merman, for lack of a better word. The last thing he remembers is searching for his sister and brothers in arms after an explosion. He wakes in the lab to the sounds of Abbie’s voice and mentally links with her and shares the memories of their past encounter. After an infusion of human blood, Hauke is miraculously back from the dead just in time for all hell to break loose.

He backed her toward the unmade bed situated against the side wall. “I need to love you now, sweet Abbie. All of you.”
— Hauke

The pair turn to Abbie’s uncle for protection. Uncle Tony is an ex-CIA operative who is a ghost. Seriously, he basically never existed due to his past government relations. With Tony’s help, they manage to get Hauke home under the sea. Take note of Uncle Tony, because you will see him again!

“Te amo’?” she questioned through their link.
“It means I love you.”

Of course it’s not going to be that easy!

There is a lot of action to be had, as well as more characters to meet and fall in love with. The overall story Arc of the Bracadytes and the infection will continue throughout the whole series.

Ditter Kellen weaves mythology into a uniquely beautiful story that is the world of the Bracadytes. The characters are fictional but will illicit real emotions. You will want to rise up on their behalf to protect them from the human ignorance that threatens their well-being.

“You have a strange vocabulary, my mate. I am not certain why they would give me a rat’s ass”
— Hauke

The Enigma series has quickly become one of my favorites! I can’t wait to listen to the next as I devour this series like candy. I want to know how every character’s story plays out!

I can’t really comment more without spoiling something. And trust me, there are things I want to say about some of the people I want to stab in the face, lol, but I will have to make this series a part of the Read Along With Me titles, so look for it over there hopefully soon.

“Do not feel bad for me, my mate. I cannot change what I am, and I sense the love you hold for me inside your heart. Know that I possess feelings for you that you could never comprehend.”
— Hauke

♥ Narrator(s) ♥

This is my fourth listen by Johnny Mack, and I’m still loving it! His performance of both male and female character works. If I had to nit pick, the only thing I could say is sometimes the transitioning between narration and Hauke’s voice is not always smooth, which is not that big of a deal, being that it is a transition of Hauke’s thoughts/POV to Hauke speaking, so its all still Hauke. 🙂

Review: Apprentice (Wanderers Series #2)

My ReviewsThe pain of loss affects us more than the joy of winning!

Apprentice is #02 of 05 in the Wanderers Series by Richard A Bamberg. There are currently 03 published with 02 being in audio. The author plans for 2 more bringing the total for the series to 05.

Johnny Mack continues to narrate the series, and is also slated to narrate the future titles.

This is a continuing main character story-line so even though it is not quite a cliffhanger at the end, there is also no HEA either.

I would suggest reading these in order!

Length: 9 hrs and 6 mins

Warning: SEX!
As with the first one, Rafe manages to find his way into bed with multiple women, and now he has a female partner who is just as bad as he is, so yes, there is sex. You have been warned!

Trigger Warnings
Both of our wanders are veterans, and “chosen” from familiar battles. They have memories played out on the page with Rafe’s going back to Vietnam.

“Did you tell him how a Wanderer is born?” . . . .  “We’re harvested from the killing fields by a Valkyrie” . . . .  “I thought the Valkyrie were reapers of the dead.” . . . .  “Exactly”

♥ Story ♥

SPOILER WARNING
If you have not read/listened to book 01 in this series, some of this review might be spoilery for you.

Part 2 picks up not long after part 01. Rafe is getting an apprentice! Although he knows what it takes to join the Wanderer club, he still isn’t expecting the condition in which he finds his new trainee. The fact that his new apprentice is a woman is one for the record books. Allegedly, there has never been a female wanderer, but part of me feels like we will find out that is wrong.

“My name is Raphael Semmes, my friends call me Rafe. You and I are going to travel roads few people ever experience.”

The world building continues with more glimpses into other dimensions and the creatures they contain. Norn Fate Verðandi makes another appearance, for what I feel like is too little, too late. Seriously, that chick really sucks! We also get to meet another Godly being, to which I am not fully sure of his intentions. But given who it is, that is to be expected.

Loki grinned and for the first time I saw his legends appear in his features. “We wager loyalties, territory, and lives. For, in the long run, what else is there?”

Rowle is not seen in person this book, but that doesn’t mean his presence isn’t felt. He is busy spreading rumors and instigating havoc throughout the realms which puts a chink in Rafe’s training plans. On a positive, I don’t think Rowle knows about the new apprentice. Yet!

Through Tess we get to learn more about the life and times of what it is to be a Wanderer. We also get backstory clips from Rafe’s short time with his mentor Walt. It is sad and a bit alarming how much Rafe doesn’t really know.

Ragnarök would open the gates between Earth and the dimensions that held the old gods and all manner of mythological creatures.

There are twists and turns that take a toll. Hind sight is 20/20 and we do the best we can at the time, but it still cuts deep when you learn that you could of done it differently.

I can’t really comment more without spoiling something. And trust me, there are things I want to say about some of his regrets, but I will have to make this series a part of the Read Along With Me titles, so look for it over there hopefully soon.

This is my 02 read/listen by Richard A. Bamberg, and I want more! He is a mythology geek after my own heart! Sadly I will have to wait on part 03 from the Wanderers Series. 🙁
I am itching to get my hands on Monster Hunting 101!

♥ Narrator(s) ♥

This is my third listen by Johnny Mack, and I’m still not tired of his performances! His voice definitely works for the rough around the edges Rafe as well as the sassy Tess. He can also manage to set apart all the other voices to create separate characters that are each their own person. It’s easy to get lost in the wonderful world created by Richard when Mr. Mack is telling you the story!

Review: Wanderers: Ragnarök (Wanderers #1) by Richard A Bamberg

My ReviewsI want a manticore-possessed Harley!

This is the first book in the Wanderers Series. This is a continuing story line and characters, so even though it is not a cliffhanger at the end, there is also no HEA either.

♥ Story ♥
This story’s mythology is based around Norse traditions of the deities claiming fallen warriors as their champions. Most people are only familiar with the Valkyries, but just like the Greeks there were many deities to pray to that all came with their own entourages.

That’s where Rafe finds himself, as the minion of the Fate Verðandi. Who I have to say is pretty bad leading her Wanderers. Rafe has gone over 5 years without any contact or messages from her. As a Wanderer, he is to keep the status quo of good and evil by destroying demons that are causing havoc and disturbing this balance.

Rafe has been alone since his mentor was killed so is not in tune with the danger that is coming his way. Someone is trying to set in to motion the events that will lead to Ragnarök. For those that are not aware of what that is, it is the Norse equivalent of the end of days. It’s the final battle for the right to rule the world.

Needless to say, this is a bad thing. In trying to stop the first step in the end of the world Rafe has his trusted familiar Beast, that is a manticore who most often is in the form of a Harley, which makes for some humorous scenes. He has to team up with some overly horny witches, seriously they will not leave the dude alone, to try and prevent the first essentially “seal” from being broken.

The mythology is solid, and there is a lot of action, but I feel like this title suffers from first-book-itus. Too much info dumped over too long of a time, pulled the story down with it. It’s still a good start to a series and I’m looking forward to the next one.

♥ Author ♥
This is my first read/listen by Richard A Bamberg and I think it’s a great start. Very creative world building. I’m very curious to see what book 2 brings.

♥ Narrator(s) ♥
Johnny Mack is great as always. I have listened to him in other books and he just has that perfect amount of gruff to his voice that can be both charming and sultry in the same book.
